Detailed Itinerary —7-Day Rwanda Wildlife & Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you’ll be met by your guide. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a city tour including the Kigali Genocide Memorial and local markets. Dinner and overnight in Kigali.

Day 2: Kigali – Transfer to Akagera National Park

After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah reserve and home to the Big Five. Arrive in time for lunch at your lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy your first game drive, spotting elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions. Overnight at Akagera.

Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in Akagera

Spend a full day exploring Akagera with morning and afternoon drives. The park’s diverse habitats, from lakes to open savannahs, host hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. Sunset over Lake Ihema makes for perfect photography. Overnight at your Akagera lodge.

Day 4: Akagera – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, drive southwest to Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of rolling hills, tea plantations, and traditional villages. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon. Overnight at Nyungwe.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe

Rise early for a chimpanzee trekking adventure in Nyungwe Forest. The experience of following these primates in their natural habitat is thrilling and rewarding. Return for lunch, then enjoy an afternoon canopy walk across a suspended bridge that offers panoramic views of the forest and excellent birdwatching. Overnight in Nyungwe.

Day 6: Nyungwe – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, depart for Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s northwest. The scenic drive passes through the “land of a thousand hills” with stops for photography and cultural encounters. Arrive at your lodge near the park and prepare for the highlight of the safari—gorilla trekking. Overnight at Volcanoes.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes – Return to Kigali

Early in the morning, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning your gorilla trekking adventure. The trek may take a few hours depending on the location of the gorilla family, but the reward is an unforgettable hour observing these gentle giants up close. After trekking, return to Kigali for your onward flight, concluding your safari.
